On 23rd June 2014, seventeen 4 person teams played on the magnificent Marquis Course at Woburn Golf Club in a day in James’s memory and raised over £30,000 for the charity after all expenses. Players included many of James’s family and friends with the day being generously sponsored by certain individuals whilst each team made a donation to the charity of £1000 or more.
A beautiful sunny day was enjoyed by all right up to the moment the last player walked into the Club House for the prizegiving and auction. At that moment a thunderstorm erupted which would have undoubtedly stopped all play if it had arrived any earlier.
Players were very complimentary about the perfect condition of the course and the on course lunch went down particularly well in preference to something more formal in the club house.
Clare’s sister Louisa made a handsome profit on a long Par 3 hole where players paid £20 and received a bottle of champagne if they managed to land their ball on the green. Only 8 bottles of champagne were won which was some reflection on the skill of the field!
The talented auctioneer, Humphrey Butler, did a brilliant job in encouraging a relatively small audience to bid very generously for some unique prizes. This helped turn the day from being a highly enjoyable day in James’s memory into a very successful event for the charity.
